Why your US visa photo was rejected.
The short answer
A DS-160 photo can fail on rules you can't see by looking at it. The file must be a square JPEG between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels, 240 kB or less, with a compression ratio of 20:1 or less, so a file squeezed too small fails as well. Check those first, then the rules a person judges: a white or off-white background, no glasses, and a recent photo that hasn't been edited.
Do it now
The file rules
These come from the State Department's digital image requirements. A checker can measure every one of them.
| Rule | What the official page says | How it goes wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Square | A phone photo is usually 3:4 or 9:16 and has to be cropped. |
| Pixels | At least 600 × 600, at most 1200 × 1200 | Photos straight from a phone are far bigger than 1200 px. |
| File type | JPEG | A PNG renamed to .jpg is still a PNG inside, and portals read the inside. |
| File size | 240 kB or less | An uncompressed export can be several MB. |
| Compression | A ratio of 20:1 or less | Squeezing the file too hard to get under 240 kB breaks this rule. At 600 × 600 the file needs at least 54,000 bytes. |
| Colour | Colour, 24 bits per pixel, sRGB | Black-and-white or greyscale files fail. |
Head and eye position
The photo composition template sets where the face sits in the square:
- The head, from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin, takes up 50% to 69% of the image height.
- The eyes sit between 56% and 69% of the image height, measured from the bottom.
The rules a person judges
No file check can confirm these. Go through them yourself before you upload:
- Taken in the last 6 months, in colour.
- Plain white or off-white background.
- Full face, neutral expression, both eyes open.
- No eyeglasses, except in rare medical cases with a signed statement. No headphones, and no hat unless it is worn daily for religious reasons.
- Not digitally enhanced or altered. The page also warns against "low quality vending machine or mobile phone photos".
How to fix it
- Run your current file through the checker set to the US visa rules. It shows which rule failed.
- If the size, shape, type or compression failed, make the photo again with the US visa photo tool. It crops to a square, sizes it between 600 and 1200 px and picks a JPEG quality that lands between the 20:1 floor and 240 kB.
- If the head or eyes are out of range, place the guide lines on your hair line, eyes and chin, and the tool frames the square to the template.
- If a judged rule is the problem (glasses, background, an edited photo), take a new photo. Resizing can't fix those.

Questions
Can a photo be too small in KB for the DS-160?
Yes. The rule that the compression ratio should be 20:1 or less sets a floor: at 600 × 600 pixels the file needs at least 54,000 bytes, and at 1200 × 1200 at least 216,000 bytes.
Is 240 kB the same as 240 KB on my computer?
Not always. Windows counts a KB as 1024 bytes, so a file it shows as 235 KB is about 240,640 bytes. We count 1000 bytes per KB, the stricter reading, so a file that passes here passes either way.
Can I wear glasses in a US visa photo?
No, except in rare medical cases with a signed statement, according to the State Department's photo page.
