The short answer

Print sizes differ by country: the US uses 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm), the UK 45 × 35 mm, Canada 50 × 70 mm, Australia 35–40 × 45–50 mm, China's visa 33 × 48 mm and Schengen visas 35 × 45 mm. Online applications set their own pixel and KB limits instead. The tables below list each one with its official source.

Before you trust a size chart

  • Rules change. Every row here links to its official source below, with the date we checked it.
  • Head size matters as much as photo size. A 2 × 2 photo with the head too small still fails.
  • Only the countries we have checked appear here. Other Schengen states use the same 35 × 45 mm format, but we list the German missions' numbers because those are the ones we have read.

Questions

Is 2 × 2 inches the same as 35 × 45 mm?

No. 2 × 2 in is 51 × 51 mm and square. 35 × 45 mm is taller than it is wide. Printing one in place of the other will be rejected.

Can I print a passport photo at home?

It depends on the country. The US passport page asks for matte or glossy photo-quality paper. Canada says it doesn't accept photos printed at home, and Australia asks for dye-sublimation prints.
