Fairsize

OCI photo, square and under 200 KB.

The OCI portal takes a square JPEG between 200 × 200 and 900 × 900 pixels, up to 200 KB, on a plain light background that is not white. Check the lines we place on your head, eyes and chin, and get a 600 × 600 photo sized to those rules.

The official rules

Shape and sizeSquare, at least 200 × 200 px and at most 900 × 900 px
FileJPEG, 200 KB or less
BackgroundPlain light colour, not white, no border
Head sizeTop of hair to bottom of chin 1 to 1 3/8 in (25–35 mm) in a 2 × 2 in photo
Eye height1 1/8 to 1 3/8 in (28–35 mm) from the bottom
PoseHead and shoulders, full face in the middle, eyes open, natural expression
GlassesAllowed without glare; no tinted or dark glasses
SignatureJPEG, 200 KB or less

The OCI FAQ also asks for "80% coverage of face" without saying what it is measured against. The OCI photo specification sets the head at 25–35 mm of the 51 mm photo, so the maker uses that: 49–69% of the height.

Worth knowing

  • OCI wants a light background that is not white. A pale grey or cream wall works; the background check warns if the corners look pure white.
  • The signature has its own upload with the same 200 KB JPEG limit. The OCI upload kit makes the photo and the signature on one page and checks both.
  • For children under ten the head size and eye position can be "somewhat relaxed", and babies under one year do not need their eyes open.
